Our Learning Environment

At Woodlands Primary Academy, our thoughtfully designed indoor and outdoor environments are key to fostering independence and a lifelong love of learning. Children are encouraged to explore freely, access resources independently, make choices, follow their interests, and deepen their thinking. This approach leads to high levels of engagement and supports deeper, more meaningful learning.

We offer continuous provision throughout the day, enabling children to take the lead in their own learning through purposeful play. A wide variety of resources are always available, and carefully planned enhancements are introduced to reflect and extend current learning themes.

Children also benefit from free-flow access between the classroom and our outdoor garden area, allowing them to move seamlessly between indoor and outdoor learning. We are incredibly fortunate to have access to a rich natural environment, including nearby woods, a pond, and an orchard—providing endless opportunities for exploration, discovery, and connection with nature.

A Typical Day in Reception

During a typical day in Reception, children take part in structured carpet sessions where the whole class comes together for focused learning.

We follow the Read Write Inc. phonics scheme—a well-structured and rigorous scheme that equips children with the essential skills to become confident, fluent readers.

In maths, we use the NCETM Mastering Number scheme, which supports children in developing a strong, deep understanding of number and number relationships, laying the foundation for future mathematical learning.

Children take part in structured carpet sessions that are thoughtfully themed around our current topic. These sessions are carefully planned to build on the children’s existing knowledge and to support their continued learning and development.

Snack

We offer a rolling snack time, where children can independently help themselves to a selection of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables throughout the day. Children have continuous access to their water bottles throughout the day. We kindly ask that bottles are filled with water only.

Visitors and Trips

Throughout the year, we enrich the children’s learning with a variety of exciting activities, including special visitors and educational trips. These experiences bring learning to life and create lasting memories. In recent years, our adventures have included visits to the Christmas Pantomime, St Nicholas Church, Hickling Broad, and Norwich Playhouse. We’ve also welcomed beekeepers into the classroom and proudly hosted our very own art exhibition in the school hall.
